Happy Anniversary to Us!!!

Well, according to every, memory, reminder, update, and alert, it's time for What's In-Store Music to celebrate another year in business. It's hard to believe it's been nine years since we got our first song placed with Retail Radio. A lot has happened since then. The music industry landscape has changed significantly, there are more and more avenues to explore to promote your music. However, one thing has stayed the same, overhead music in retail spaces continues to be one of the best ways to help connect the dots between all your other marketing efforts.

Naturally, we didn't make it nine years all alone, there are people to thank, starting with Shawn Cash, the original owner of Retail Radio, later lead sound designer at Spectrio, and now we're working together once again with his new employer, Rockbot. Shawn has worked closely with me from the inception of the company. It isn't an understatement to say I couldn't have done this without him. Speaking of Spectrio (the company programming our music), I'd like to thank the man behind the controls, Steve Zanardi, for keeping the wheels in motion. Thank you to AllAccess.com for continuing to exclusively publish the What's In-Store Music Charts since 2018!!! Behind the scenes, I'd like to thank Codi Quick and her team at Quick Business Resolutions for keeping everything organized and on schedule. Thank you to my wife and partner, Monica Emerson for putting up with me through all of this over the years. Finally, I'd like to thank all of you, my friends and clients. Your continued support throughout the years has meant more than you could know. I know many of you will have the overwhelming urge to send gifts which is very generous of you, but we couldn't accept. If you'd like to submit a new song, however, we'd be more than happy to take that!

"better than this"

"Our new single 'better than this' is a feel-good pop rock song telling the story of a not feel-good situation. When writing the song, we were talking about the struggles in our own lives and how so many other people deal with those same struggles every day too – such as making ends meet, paying ever-increasing rent, mental health, work pressures, etc. Sometimes it’s all just overwhelming and it feels like there’s no end in sight. Instead of taking the song down a darker route melodically, we wanted to flip it on its head and make it this fun, high-energy track so that everyone can just let it all go. The lyrics might be saying one thing, but the way the music moves just makes you feel this other way, so it’s almost like this chance to just “dance it out” and try to feel good in the moment. Trying to make something positive out of something that doesn’t feel so positive. We had a lot of fun making this song and just really let the music lead us where it ended up."

Out & About With
Croshal Entertainment Group owner, Fred Croshal

At Wood Ranch in Agoura, CA

It was a long overdue visit between two friends, me, and Croshal Entertainment Group owner, Fred Croshal. The location, our usual spot, Wood Ranch in Agoura, California. As always it was filled with laughter, and fun, while we caught up. However, we also had business to discuss. Fred is ramping up a campaign for longtime friends and clients Collective Soul, who have a very exciting 30th Anniversary they're celebrating this year with all sorts of exciting things to announce to commemorate the event, including a Walmart & Sam's Club Radio Takeover!!!

Here, check this out. In 1994, Collective Soul burst onto the music scene with their debut album Hints Allegations & Things Left Unsaid. Now, 30 years later, the band is still going strong and continues to create infectious Alt-Rock music that is loved around the world! The new album Here To Eternity contains 20 tracks of the catchy melodies, driving guitars, and soaring choruses that have defined the band’s sound since their early days. Featuring the new single “Mother’s Love”, this collection is a love letter to the fans. 2024 is a big year for Collective Soul: they are embarking on a huge, national tour with Hootie & The Blowfish and Edwin McCain and preparing to debut a documentary about the band’s 30-year history with major film festivals. The last 3 decades have brought Collective Soul here, and they intend to push on for decades to come!

Have a great week,

Scott Emerson
