wildflower by Jordan Frye

"Wildflower" is essentially surf-rock disguised as pop music—a perfect reflection of my roots. Growing up in Ventura, California, surfing and skateboarding were always part of the backdrop of my life. That carefree spirit, that rebellious escape, that feeling that everything is going to be alright—it all found its way into my music, and "Wildflower" is the perfect extension of my sound right now. I wrote it for my partner, Katrina, whom I met in college, right by the ocean. She’s from San Luis Obispo, and when I got her number, the 805 area code sealed the deal. We were two beach kids who fell in love fast, and every lyric in this song is about her—"My California dream, 1975. With that denim skirt and your Zeppelin shirt, baby light my fire." The words came naturally because they’re real. At its core, "Wildflower" is nostalgic. There's a "wildflower" in everybody’s life—that friend who makes you laugh, that person who inspires you to take risks, or even that inner belief that life is still good. For me, this song immortalizes the dreaminess of our story. Katrina introduced me to Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty, and Dylan, filling my world with new inspiration, and to me, the song just sounds like her. At the start of this year, I committed to releasing music that makes me happy, and I never imagined that the first song I put out on January 3rd would land next to my musical heroes on the top 40 radio charts. I’m still in shock, but there’s an incredible fulfillment in seeing years of hard work pay off. I cherish every single person listening and don’t take a minute of this journey for granted. Since releasing my first full-length album, Beautiful Wasteland, in 2022, life has been grueling. I wasn’t sure when I’d feel free to write songs like "Wildflower" again, but now that I have—and now that people have embraced it—it’s the confirmation I needed to keep going. To keep writing for myself, my family, my friends, and my fans.
