1. Hard to believe it's been 10 years… when you think back to the early days of Lakeside, what do you remember most-and did you have any idea it would grow into what it is now?
In the early days of Lakeside we started as a management company with Paul Loren as our very first client and quickly evolved into the label services support team for Island Records as they were going through a transitional time. We had success with multiple artists during that partnership including delivering The Vamps their first TOP 40 US Radio Chart Debut! I realized then that there was a real need across the industry for an experienced label services team that could deliver results for major labels, independent labels, and independent artists alike. Over the years we've adapted and grown into a Management Company, Label Services Company, and Records Label to meet all of the needs of our many diverse clients and artists.
2. We've both seen artists come and go-what do you think is the biggest difference between the ones who actually build something lasting and the ones who just have a quick moment?
There needs to be a certain level of talent to start and the music needs to be relatable for sure but hard work and persistence is the major factor in my opinion. The chemistry of the team and having one focused goal is also very important. Just because you haven't broken through "yet" doesn't mean you never will and that mindset is a difference maker.
3. The business has changed so much since we first met-streaming, social, all of it. What's something you still see artists getting wrong today? What are the successful ones doing right?
It drives me crazy when I see artists releasing great songs without any plan and then hope the song goes viral. You still need a team to work with you to put together a release plan and focus on marketing, promotion, press, digital strategies etc. Again, persistence and consistency is key. Releasing music often, promoting it with creative strategies, playing shows, and connecting with fans is all part of a successful plan.
4. So now that you've hit this 10-year mark… what excites you the most?
I get excited the most when I hear music that moves me or makes me feel inspired. Our most recent management client Jordan Frye first played me songs from his album "daydreaming" and I immediately felt like we needed to work together and have as many people hear the album as possible. We're only a few months into it but I'm excited about our plan and shared vision for the project!
5. Over the years, you've had great success helping artists build their careers. What would you consider some career highlights, and who are you excited about now?
I've been very fortunate to have many career highlights over the past 25 years but some of the most recent standouts are having six artists on the US POP Chart within an 18 month period including Lawrence "Don't Lose Sight", LANY "XXL", and Charlotte Sands "Dress" among others. Also, having Lawrence and LANY on iHeart's Jingle Ball that year was pretty special. A few of the independent bands I've really connected with personally and developed from the start include We The Kings, Andy Grammer, Kevin Rudolf, Lauv, and Secondhand Serenade who all continue to have very successful careers. A few of the artists we're working with now that I'm excited about include John Roberts from the hit TV show Bob's Burgers, Jordan Frye, senses, Coyote Theory, Daniel Saint Black, Toby Lightman, and Paper Money who just landed their first US TOP 40 Chart Debut with "Pretty Faces" which is being played now on 100+ stations!
